The first mission to mars was launched on October 10 1960 by the USSR. The launch failed. On November 28 1964 NASSA’s Mariner 4 became the first successful spacecraft to reach Mars. The Soviet Union launched the Mars 3 Orbiter/ Lander on May 28 1971. The mission was a partial success.


It is still considered classified information that the Mars 3 Orbiter/Lander was a manned space craft.
